Smoke-Free Vehicles

 

Reasons to make your vehicle Smoke-Free:

  • There is no safe level of second-hand smoke
     

  • The health risks associated with second-hand smoke are increased because of the small enclosed space in a vehicle
     

  • Second-hand smoke is poisonous and contains over 4,000 chemicals of which 40 are known to cause caner
     

  • Smoking in your home and car increases a child’s risk of illnesses including colds, ear infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, other respiratory disease, childhood cancer and sudden infant death syndrome
     

  • An Ipsos Reid poll showed that 86% of non-smokers and 66% of smokers support provincial legislation banning smoking in cars with children

Opening a window is not enough!

  • Second-hand smoke lingers long after a cigarette is finished
     

  • Toxic chemicals cling to fabric and other materials inside your vehicle

Tips on how to make your vehicle smoke-free

  • Talk about it with your family
           - Sit down and talk about the risks of smoking and why you want to make your vehicle smoke-free
     

  • Make a plan!
    - Place a smoke-free vehicle decal in your car to let others know that you have a smoke-free vehicle

    - Remove the ashtrays from inside of your vehicle or fill them with something else (i.e. sugar-free candy)
    - If you are not ready to quit smoking, plan when you are going to have your cigarettes to avoid smoking in the car
    - Plan to make stops on long trips so that you can smoke outside of your car
    - Plan on how to deal with people who will ask you to smoke in your car
     

  • Ask smoking friends and family to take it outside
